Where is Their Press?

Hannah McNichols, Opinions Editor

Our varsity boys basketball team is 13-2. Okay, I got it. I mean look at our student section, everybody at North knows. We’ve even been on the news multiple times for it.

Now before I start my rant, I want to put out there that I am in no way bashing our boys. They are doing amazing. They’re getting somewhere.

But what about the ones who are already there?

Not many know, but here at North High School, we have our own shooting range. And they’re ranked, not only state wide, but nationally.

JROTC’s rifle team not only practices every day during the school year but they’re also here everyday during the summer. And let me tell you, it pays off.

Next month on February 19, five students from North’s MCJROTC rifle team, will head to Camp Perry, Ohio to compete in the National JROTC Air Rifle Championship.

Okay, now forget about every other sport or extracurricular activity.

Where was our student section last year when “our boys” weren’t doing to well? I don’t know about you, but I sure didn’t hear anything about them last year.

Because our varsity boys basketball team is 13-2, everybody loves them. That’s it. If they hadn’t won 13 out of 15 games, our student section would not be here. Now tell me I’m wrong?

Oh, you want to? Football. Swimming. Bowling. Tennis. Golf. Where is their student section? We don’t have one. I take that back, we have a small one for football. But other than that you never hear about it because “North doesn’t do sports”.

Our statistics of winning in any other physical sport are not good. Everybody knows it.

Our rifle team on the other hand, is fanominal. But nobody knows because they don’t get $30,000 worth of donations. They don’t get the coverage by the local news that the basketball team gets. They don’t get stories in the Sunday paper or the highlights on the ten o’clock news.
