The NHS theater department finished their 2014-2015 with Blithe Spirit; a comedy by Noël Coward on April 12. The show (if you haven’t read the preview) is about Charles (Michael Xayavong) who invites Madame Arcati (Jake Mentzer) to put on a séance so he can get “a few tricks of the trade”. The plot goes on and Charles’ current wife Ruth (Esperanza Vargas) thinks he’s going mad because they conjured up his deceased wife Elvira (Mayte Gomez-Cruz) by accident. Along with his current wife, Dr. Bradman (Duncan Vivanh/Marcos Hernandez) and Mrs. Bradman (LeeLee Hill) come in and out of the show and state that they think he’s crazy too.

On April 12, seniors of the program were sent off with gifts and vibes to head off into their future. The show overall, was a success to director Mark Rixner, since he always wanted to do a show that challenged his actors with heavy acting, he was ecstatic with the outcome of the show.

With a four show run, the cast successfully performed a very difficult show. From the accents to the large amount of lines, the small cast worked countless hours to put on the show with even more new equipment for the show.

To keep the show intimate for the audience and the actors, the department invested money into new black curtains that pushed people to the front of the seats instead of in the back, “we want people to really see everything that’s happening on the stage, instead of being disconnected in the back” theater director Mark Rixner commented.

Along with the difficult acting of the show, the technical aspect was also a challenge. The show had an elaborate looking set with stained wood and vintage styled furniture, but behind the scenes there were several stage hands to make effects possible, such as the moving pictures and table in the show.

Several people commented after the show that it was one of the best productions we have had in our school and were left guessing how the show produced all of its effects.
