30 Minutes It’s Not Enough

Michael Colon-Ramos, Features Assistant

It is a known fact that most Des Moines Public Schools, like Lincoln and East, get out at 2:35. Since we at North High School used to get longer lunches, we got out at 2:45 and we were happy. I mean, more lunch time; why wouldn’t we be happy?

This year, our lunch has been reduced to 30 minutes and two minutes have been added to every single class. Frankly, we don’t need those two extra minutes, since don’t do anything by the time the clock reaches those minutes.

Archie Cook the US History teacher said, “A long time ago, we use to get out at 2:35. But people complain about not having enough time for lunch so they extended the lunch time to 45 minutes, so that caused us to get out at 2:45, but now we have short lunch time again”.

I personally do not understand why they made lunch shorter when we have over three hundred freshmen this year, so there’s barely enough time to eat. I don’t know the reason for, this but I think it is ridiculous that we have short lunch time and still get out so late, unlike the others DMPS schools.

Teachers also expect us to not go out and eat at McDonald’s or go to Burger King but it’s almost impossible to eat here because the lines to get the food are ridiculously long, and when you get your food, the bell rings.

When we go out to get food, we come back to eat our lunch and the bell rings, so there is no possible way to get your food and eat it calmly. The teachers expect us to not eat our food, and to throw it away. No, I will not throw my food away because you did not pay for it! Unless you are going to give me my money back, I am not throwing my food away.

I think we should have our 45 minute lunch back. There are too many freshmen this year to get so little lunch time, or let us get out at 2:35. It is not fair that we get out late having short lunch time.
